Where Artificial Intelligence Meets Conceptual Art Instruction
In a bold exploration of computational creativity and conceptual art, we challenged a large language model to generate an ever-evolving series of instructional art pieces. Inspired by the pioneering works of Fluxus, Yoko Ono, Sol LeWitt, John Baldessari, Lawrence Weiner, Miranda July, Robert Morris, George Brecht, Allan Kaprow, Erwin Wurm, and Lygia Clark, this project pushes the boundaries of artistic expression, reimagining the instructional art movement through the lens of artificial intelligence.
Example from generative-instructions.comProject Overview
"Generative Instructions 2024" exists at the intersection of human creativity and machine learning. Each instruction set is uniquely generated, creating an infinite stream of possibilities for performance, interpretation, and execution. The project challenges our understanding of authorship, artistic intent, and the evolving role of AI in creative processes.
Technical Innovation
Trained on the distinctive styles and methodologies of influential instructional artists, the AI learns to generate new pieces that honor these traditions while also producing something entirely original. This hybrid form of creativity questions the boundaries between human and machine-generated art, offering fresh perspectives on both.

"Generative Instructions 2024" has manifested in several forms:
- Digital Platform: generative-instructions.com is an online platform that explores the intersection between art and artificial intelligence. It provides viewers with a daily stream of AI-generated instructional art pieces, offering a unique opportunity to engage with new, thought-provoking instructions every day. The platform invites users to experience how AI interprets and reimagines the art of instruction, pushing the boundaries of creativity.
- Play-I Installation An incarnation of Generative Instructions, Play-I was a site-specific installation that took place at Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City on October 12-13 and 19-20, 2024, as part of the Stylecade event. Curated by Anaïs Gallagher, this fashion-focused installation invited visitors to engage with AI-generated fashion art instructions, transforming the shopping experience into an interactive art encounter. The installation resonated with Westfield's How We Shop report, which revealed that 76% of Brits desire immersive, playful experiences, with over half of Londoners particularly drawn to AI and gamification.
